THE SOUL'S SINCERE DESIRE

I figured out and walked for miles
at night along the coastline,
scripting in my mind ghastly blank verses
and snooping endlessly
for someone wonderful
who would step out of the darkness
and adjust my life.

When none but God could hear—

and Sometimes when hearts are weak,
He gives the very gifts believers seek.
But often faith must learn a deeper rest,
and trust God’s silence, when He does not speak;
For he whose name is Love will send the best.

Stars may burn out nor mountain walls endure,
But God is true;
His promises are sure
to those who speak.

Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire,
Uttered or unexpectedly muttered—
It is the shift of a hidden fire,
That trembles in the breast.

Prayer is the talk of a walk,
desired through the weight of a sigh.

Prayer is the falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.
